As the family grew, Aunt Lizzie Zundel purchased the home across the street from the log cabin. It was the center of activity for the family and the people in town—Mom decorated for all parties, activities, and many weddings and events. The home has been remodeled over the years, remodeling the kitchen, adding a dining room, and enlarging the living room. Six children were raised and thrived without indoor plumbing until Garth was a junior class president. He said he would not bring his girlfriend home to a place that did not have plumbing. So, a bathroom, laundry, and bedrooms were added.
The main living room is an original log cabin before add-ons. Because of the thick walls, it was very cool in the summer and very warm and cozy in the winter. Many evenings were spent on the cool front lawn, watching the stars, discussing the constellations, and listening to Grandpa’s stories. Holidays were always a special occasion, especially when the family came home. The living room floor became one giant bed for all the kids to lie down, share, and wait for Santa.
