Built 1957

After Grandma Jean was made the postmaster, they moved a farm building close to the house to accommodate the boxes and customer windows. A large metal box was put in the back to receive and pick up mail for delivery. It was the center of town, and everyone would like to visit. It didn’t open until 9:00, but it was not unusual for someone to come to the house early if they were expecting a special letter, a check, or needed something for their day. We usually would put the mail out early, but if it arrived late, people would be anxious to get it immediately.
Grandma Jean had a large iris garden just south of the post office and put in a rock garden just as you descended the stairs. Because of the large parking area by the post office, this was where the bookmobile parked on its visits. I
think Grandpa Oleen visited and read almost all of the books that Bookmobile brought. Kathy and Emily worked in the post office when Mom and Dad were gone. Grandma Jean retired from the post office after 25 years of service.
